Recommended Settings

  • "Wait" Time - 5 Minutes Or Less
  • Password Protection - Enabled

Continued Use

Since end users can change their screen savers, ensuring continued use of a particular screen saver presents a small challenge.

Management can request (or require) that users keep the screen saver active.

A batch file can be set up to insert the appropriate line into the registry file at each reboot.

With an NT network, a policy can be set to ensure the use of a particular screen saver

Installation

While the screen saver does install quickly from the CD, organizations with large numbers of computers will certainly find the use of automated distribution software such as 'WinInstall' to be extremely beneficial.

Screen Saver Implementation Tips

Sample Announcement Memo

To: All Staff
From: Top Management
Subject: Your Responsibility for Information Security

As authorized users of our information systems, each and everyone of us play a vital role in keeping our information and technology assets safe. To ensure that we each understand our roles, XYZ company has adopted extensive information security policies and standards. As part of your employment prerequisite, you were required to acknowledge your acceptance of and intent to adhere to these standards.

To help fulfill management's role of ensuring that these standards continue to be followed, we are implementing an ongoing security awareness program designed to help all of us not only learn what our responsibilities are, but how to incorporate secure practices into our everyday routines.

Part of this program will include installation of an educational screen saver on everyone's computer. While informative in nature, it is cleverly designed to be both entertaining and enjoyable. Please maintain this as your active screen saver, ensure you keep the password protection enabled, and keep the "wait" period set to five minutes or less. The information it provides will help enable each of us to fulfill our part in protecting our information and technology assets. In fact, merely having it installed and password-protected puts us each one step closer to fulfilling our information security responsibilities.

Sincerely,

Management
